Lean into the specifics of the friendship
Sincerity between best friends often works better with a joke attached. The gift that lands is the one nobody else could have given.
Ideas
- An inside-joke experience that would make no sense to anyone else
- A countdown of your worst shared decisions, ending on one genuine line
- Tickets to the thing you always end up doing together anyway
- A photo run from how you met to now
- For a friend who moved away: a map experience marking the places you spent time in together
Running a group gift or board
If the friend circle is chipping in, one person should run it:
- Set a deadline and a two-line limit per person
- Give everyone a prompt — "the first time you met them", "the most you" thing they've done — so entries are specific
- Collect a short voice note from anyone who would rather talk than type
See the full group-gift guide for handling the money side.
Message examples
- "Fifteen years. We've been broke together, wrong together, and occasionally right together. Happy birthday, you idiot. I'd pick you again."
- "Happy birthday to the only person who's seen me cry in a Domino's and never brought it up again."
