The Significance of the Nikah Invitation
In Islam, the Nikah is not simply a social event — it is a sacred contract blessed by Allah. The wedding invitation, therefore, carries spiritual weight. It traditionally opens with the name of Allah, expresses gratitude for His blessings, and invites guests to witness and pray for the union. Getting the language right honours both the couple and their faith.
Essential Islamic Opening Phrases
Every Muslim wedding invitation traditionally begins with one of these blessed openings:
- بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ — "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful" (universal)
- Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim — English transliteration of the above
- Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh — "Peace and blessings of Allah be upon you"
- Alhamdulillah — "All praise is due to Allah" (expressing gratitude)
- Mabrook / Mubarak — Blessings, often used as a header

Arabic Duas to Include in Your Invitation
Many couples choose to include a short Dua (prayer) on their invitation as a blessing for their union:
- بَارَكَ اللهُ لَكُمَا وَبَارَكَ عَلَيْكُمَا وَجَمَعَ بَيْنَكُمَا فِي خَيْرٍ — "May Allah bless you both, and may He bless your union and join you together in goodness."
- "And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquillity in them." — Quran 30:21
- "Our Lord, grant us from among our wives and offspring comfort to our eyes, and make us an example for the righteous." — Quran 25:74
Helpful Habits for Muslim Wedding Invitations
Practices vary between families and communities, but a few habits are worth considering depending on your family and tradition:
- Many families open with Bismillah or an Islamic greeting.
- It's often helpful to specify whether the Nikah is at a mosque or a private venue.
- If the Walima is on a different day, consider mentioning it separately so guests can plan for both.
- Some families include a line inviting guests' prayers (duas) for the couple.
- If your guest list includes more conservative relatives, floral or geometric Islamic art can be a considerate alternative to photos of the couple — though many modern couples do include their photos.
- If the event is gender-segregated or mixed, noting this on the invitation can help guests plan ahead and avoid confusion on the day.
