When Should You Send a Save the Date?
Save the dates should go out 6โ12 months before your wedding for domestic guests, and 9โ12 months for destination weddings or overseas guests. They are not the official invitation โ they are a heads-up so guests can make travel plans, book leave from work, and arrange childcare well in advance.
The rule of thumb: send save the dates as soon as you have confirmed the date and venue. Everything else โ the full invitation with event details, RSVP cards, and accommodation info โ follows closer to the wedding (6โ8 weeks before).
What to Include in a Save the Date
- The couple's names (first names are enough)
- The wedding date (and optionally, the day of the week)
- The city or venue name (full address goes on the formal invitation)
- "Formal invitation to follow" โ always add this line
- Your wedding website URL (optional but increasingly expected)

Digital Save the Date Ideas
Digital save the dates have unique advantages over paper ones: they can include animations, countdowns, background music, and links to your wedding website. Here's what to write for a digital save the date:
- A short, punchy headline: "It's happening! [Date] ยท [City]"
- A countdown timer embedded in the card
- A "Add to Calendar" button โ guests can add your wedding with one tap
- Link to your wedding website for more details
- A "Share" button so guests can forward to family they know you may have missed
Digital save the dates sent via WhatsApp should have a beautiful preview image โ choose a design that looks stunning as a thumbnail in a chat window, since that's the first impression guests will have.
Save the Date Etiquette Tips
- Only send save the dates to people who will definitely receive a formal invitation โ don't send them as a "maybe" to people you're on the fence about inviting.
- Inform your closest family before sending the digital save the date to anyone โ they should hear the news from you directly, not via a WhatsApp broadcast.
- Double-check the date spelling โ getting the day of the week wrong on a save the date is an embarrassing (and confusing) mistake.
- For very large guest lists, use a digital save the date first to gauge responses before printing formal cards.
